UKTC Terrain Update: Supporting the Transition to 11th Edition

With the new edition of Warhammer 40,000, there is a renewed focus on games that are not only balanced and fair, but also played on immersive battlefields covered in thematic terrain.

One of the biggest changes in 11th edition is the way missions, objectives, terrain areas, and battlefield layouts work together. Strategic objectives are now more directly connected to the terrain across the table, and Games Workshop has designed missions and maps to support that intended play experience.

For organised play, this matters because our priority is always to deliver events that are fair, consistent, and enjoyable. That means making sure players are not only using the right rules, but also playing on boards that reflect how the new edition has been designed to function.

Working with Games Workshop

As many of you have now heard, the Games Workshop Events team, as part of their ongoing work with independent Tournament Organisers across the world, will be supporting the LGT and the wider UKTC events scene with the resources we need to run the best events possible.

As part of the overall package we have agreed for the LGT, the UKTC will be transitioning to the new Games Workshop terrain recently previewed on Warhammer Community.

This is a major step forward for competitive 40k in the UK. It gives us the opportunity to deliver events that are more consistent with Games Workshop’s intended 11th edition experience, while also raising the visual and practical quality of our tables.

This post explains how we will manage that transition in a way that creates the least disruption possible for our events, and for the local stores, clubs, communities, and organisers who have already invested in previous terrain sets.

What this means for Birmingham and future events

The new edition of Warhammer 40,000 is due to release on 20 June. As noted in our earlier updates, Birmingham and all subsequent UKTC events will use 11th edition rules, including the new missions, terrain layouts, and terrain footprints.

However, there is a practical issue we need to manage carefully as our current terrain sets were built for the previous edition’s terrain requirements. Due to their size and shape, they do not fit cleanly onto the new 11th edition terrain footprints. That means we need an interim solution while we prepare the new Games Workshop terrain for full rollout.

For Birmingham, we will therefore be using existing Games Workshop terrain placed on the new 11th edition footprints.

This is a temporary solution. It allows us to run Birmingham using the correct 11th edition layouts and table structure, while giving us the time required to transition properly to the new terrain sets previewed by Games Workshop.

After that, UKTC will move to the new terrain as quickly and responsibly as possible for subsequent events.

Why we are not rushing the transition

We know that terrain is not a small issue for the community.

Stores, clubs, local RTT organisers, and independent TOs have invested significant time and money into terrain over the last edition. Many communities have built entire local event ecosystems around existing sets. We do not want this transition to create unnecessary disruption.

Our aim is to move the UKTC circuit toward the best possible 11th edition standard, while also supporting the people and places that make local 40k possible week after week.

That means:

  1. Birmingham will use an interim terrain solution on the new 11th edition footprints.

  2. UKTC will then transition to the new Games Workshop terrain for subsequent events.

  3. We will support local communities through the change rather than leaving them to absorb the disruption alone.

For clarity, this announcement applies to UKTC-run events. We recognise that local stores, clubs, and RTT organisers will need time and support to adapt. We are not expecting every local community to replace its terrain overnight. Nor will it be required in oder to submit your event results to the circuit. However, we do recommend that tournaments start using the same official sets as the UKTC and we will make these available at nil cost through the Terrain Library programme, if TOs wish to use them. If you don’t want to upgrade your terrain, we will be releasing a guide to show you how you can make your existing terrain work on the new maps.

Supporting local communities through the terrain library

As part of our wider Grass Roots Support Programme, UKTC will be making terrain available to local community leaders through our terrain library.

If you run a local RTT scene, manage a local gaming store, organise a club, or help lead a community where Warhammer 40,000 is played, you will be able to access UKTC terrain support at no cost to your community.

Helping your communities access the right physical infrastructure is one of the ways we can make the transition to 11th edition smoother for everyone.

If you are a local community leader and would like to be onboarded to the terrain library programme, please register using the form: https://forms.gle/pkMB2Twv1z1g3tJs8
