The Sheffield Super-Major: Making The Cut

Winning a Super-major is something that ultimately, the vast majority of players will not achieve, so those that do have already set themselves ahead of the group. To win multiple is a reserved to an even smaller handful of players, and to do it back to back to back is something even more special.
This weekend Innes Wilson took down his 3rd UKTC super-major in as many runs. A phenomenal achievement in itself, and made even more impressive by the fact that each title has been claimed by a different army. Today lets take a look at his Mont'Ka tau list and break down just a little bit of what makes it tick.

So, let's talk about the two elephants in the room. This event was one of the first (and few) super-majors that was running the Twin Lance at their release points, and pre-nerfed ability. Not only does this pair pack a slightly sickening amount of output, but were also able to move in EACH players fight phase, giving them a ludicrous amount of security and mobility to dance around fire lines.
For those of you who don't know the Mont'Ka, or killing blow. This is a detachment and playstyle that is heavily weighted to the front half of the game, leveraging speed and brutal firepower to crippled the opponent's force before they know what has hit them. In the first 3 turns, all the weapons equipped by Tau units will have assault (allowing them to advance and shoot), and if they target a spotted unit will have lethal hits in addition. This means that everything flies across the board, with strong base moves to begin with and can really look to contest and dominate fire lanes.
A very strong suite of stratagems allow for some great flexibility, with the ability to unlock full, army-wide, hit re-rolls against an enemy target after that unit destroys a Tau unit absolutely mitigates a lot of variance in the damage profiles. And a cheeky trick using the Kroot War shaper free strat ability to gain a bonus AP for a firing activation into a single target helps even more to bring down the bigger 2+ armour saves and makes even the chip damage just that little bit more lethal.
The play pattern is fairly simple, use your pathfinders to aggressively screen the midboard and gain space for your scout moves. Then in your turn they look to push up the board as the gunline follows behind picking off one target after another, there are a few units of Kroot hounds and vespid for some little bits of scoring that also benefit from the strategic conqueror enhancement allowing these fast units to get extra OC to flip objectives or to enable them to start an action in the case of the dogs.
One of the most aggressive lists in the game, paired with one of the most aggressive players in the game it is no surprise to hear that Innes was able to maximise his mobility and output across all 7 rounds of the game, with his Twin-Lance moving over 800" in the whole event, a fun side quest he embarked on during his path to victory.
The list is not an auto win however, as we saw some stiff resistance being put up by Andy Quas-Cohen in the finals with the starshatter Necrons getting very close to surviving the damage output but falling away just shy of taking the game.
Once again congratulations to Innes for this frankly remarkable achievement, and the good news for the rest of us is that his next UKTC super major event will be the newly launched Edinburgh Super-Major, so if you want a chance to challenge for the title and stop his 4/4 run you can get your ticket to that today!
