From a local club to your next UKTC event

It can start with a message in the club chat: “Anyone fancy going to this?” A few replies, a shared lift and a weekend in the diary later, your usual opponents become the people you meet between rounds to compare notes.

If you’ve been enjoying games locally and wondering about your first UKTC event, that is a good place to begin. Pick something you’d enjoy, bring the army you know and give yourself a few club nights to get ready.

Start with the people around your table

The London Wargaming Guild is a good example of what a local community can offer. Founded in 2013, the group welcomes beginners and experienced players, runs regular gaming sessions in central London and includes Warhammer 40,000 among its games. Casual meetups, social events and tournaments all sit within the same community.

That mix gives players room to find their feet. You can ask someone to explain an unfamiliar army, practise a mission together or talk through a game afterwards. For your own group, choosing an event gives those evenings a shared goal—and something to look forward to.

Put a date in the chat and find out who is interested. Agree the game system and format, check travel and accommodation costs, and make sure everyone has the correct ticket. Even a small group can make the planning feel much easier.

Use your club nights to get comfortable

Once you’ve chosen an event, read its pack together. Check the army requirements, missions, round timings and list deadline, then use a practice evening to work through anything unfamiliar.

Try playing a full game to the event’s round length. Practise explaining your army’s key rules clearly and recording the score as you go. Ask a clubmate to check your list and help you spot anything you might forget to pack.

You can set a personal goal for the weekend too: finish your rounds on time, get more confident with a difficult matchup or come home with a new idea for your army. There is plenty to enjoy in seeing how your games develop across an event.

For 40K players, our tournament documents and game information are a useful starting point. Follow the pack for the particular event you book.

Make Bedford your next club outing

The Bedford Super-Major takes place on 5–6 December 2026, with Warhammer 40,000 and The Old World. If those games are on your club’s tables, take a look together and see who is up for a December weekend away.

For another date or location, browse the UKTC event calendar. Share the event page with your group so everyone can check the details before booking.

Running a club? Let’s talk about your next step

Our Grass Roots Support Programme is designed to help clubs, stores, societies and organisers build regular local play. Depending on what your community needs, support can include mentorship, practical event guidance, terrain and resources, and connections with judges.

Perhaps you want to run your first one-day tournament. Perhaps you already have a busy games night and would like help taking a group to a bigger event. Tell us what you’re working towards and where you could use a hand.

Email contact@uktc.events with “Grass Roots” in the subject, your club’s name and location, the games you play and the next step you’d like help with. Ask for the grassroots team and we’ll get the conversation started.
